A Short Introduction to IFS
IFS is anchored in the idea that each of us have multiple, unique facets in our personality.
These different facets all called Parts.
We already use the idea of parts to talk about our experience. We say Part of me wants one thing, and part of me doesn’t want that thing. Or when we say, I have two minds about this.
This next bit is the really important part…it turns out that we don’t have to sit-by, struggle, or even suffer when Parts are in conflict, distressed, or perpetually making a mess.
In an IFS session, we turn our attention to a Part. As we do, the act of paying attention begins the process of supporting what any specific Part knows, needs, or remembers. This tends to be radical for most people, for the customary way we deal with a difficult Part is to suppress, deny, defer, or manage it without truly resolving it.
It turns out that what helps troubling or distressed Parts the most is our presence. You might say a welcoming energy. It also turns out that inside us we all have an energy that can listen to and help a Part. When we open our heart to a Part, we can find another, more balanced way for that Part to express itself.
Giving our presence to a Part is what enables change and healing to take place. The ability to be present with a Part also allows us to be more attuned and skillful in life. Over time, we develop a more compassionate relationship with our Parts. Our personality becomes stronger and more harmonious, bringing with it a greater sense of trust, confidence, and a lot less inner-conflict.
